It is with great sadness that I report about the fire incident last February 08,2019.
On said date around 11:30 pm, a fire started in a house owned by Epifano Culaba in Purok Masagana-9, Andravel St., Brgy Central, City of Mati.
It was caused by an electrical ignition of a pinched wire. Fire suppression lasted about 4 hours. At around 3:20am on February 9, the Ground Commander, City Fire Marshall S/Insp Christian B. Cena declared fire out.
The fire razed 55 residential houses and according to the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWD) there were 79 families especially to the Halipa Families for the loss of their 3 children.
This unfortunate experience has indeed challenged our resolve as a City. However, as the blaze consumed what is visible, it nevertheless ignited something invisible in all of us Matinians. Indeed, the spark of light and hope has never been stronger within our community.
I have no doubt that we will not only get through this tragic event together but also thrive and become stronger because of it.
The City, together with Barangay Central and the Provincial Government of Davao Oriental headed by Gov. Nelson L. Dayanghirang, continues to aid the affected families, offering food and financial assistance. The LGU of Mati is also preparing the identified relocation site.
